Pioneering refers to the knowledge of ropes, knots, and splices along with the ability to build rustic structures by lashing together poles and spars. It was one of the original 57 merit badges issued by the Boy Scouts of America in 1911 making it one of the oldest Scouting skills.

The council has one pioneering kit available at Beaumont Scout Reservation and one available at Camp Lewallen. The program is led by a trained instructor and is designed to take a troop from basic knot tying to building a large project in one day.

Training Objectives 

A participant in the Pioneering Kit training will develop skills and knowledge in:

• How to encourage the personal growth of each individual boy.
• Establishing an effective relationship with boys and adults.
• How to plan and execute, with boys, an exciting and challenging program.
• How to use Scoutcraft skills with fun and games in training boys to be self-sufficient in the out-of-doors.
• How to add fun, challenge and adventure into the operation of a Boy Scout troop.
• Develop manual dexterity and teamwork by the completion of tasks involved in the project.
• Planning a challenging but successful oriented project, which results in pride of accomplishment.
• A hands-on progressive method of teaching boys Scouting skills.
